Makiの布づくりに欠かすことのできない素材、タッサーシルク。野蚕から採れる野性的な褐色の絹です。
日本の天蚕や中国の柞蚕（さくさん）と同じく野蚕の一種で、桑を食べる家蚕とは異なり、沙羅やアルジュナなどの木々の葉を食べて育ちます。Makiで使用するタッサーシルクは、インド中部・チャッティスガール州で作られています。
タッサーシルクの残糸や繭の殻、ヘタまでも無駄にすることなく使い切り、染色を施さず、素材そのものが持つ自然な色や風合いを生かしています。
縦糸にコットン、緯糸にシルクを用い、しっかりと打ち込んで織り上げられたラグは、丈夫でありながら豊かな表情を備えています。残糸の組み合わせによって生まれる色彩や質感はすべて異なり、一点ごとに風合いも色も個性的です。
糸を紡ぎ、素材を生かし、丁寧に織り上げる。その積み重ねから生まれる作品には、機械では決して再現できない温もりと生命力があります。

An indispensable material in Maki’s textile making is Tussar silk—a wild silk prized for its naturally rich brown hue and untamed character.

Like Japan’s Tensan silk and China’s Oak Tussah silk, Tussar is produced by wild silkworms. Unlike domesticated silkworms that feed on mulberry leaves, these silkworms thrive on the leaves of trees such as sal and arjuna. The Tussar silk used by Maki is produced in the state of Chhattisgarh in central India.

At Maki, every part of this precious material is carefully utilized—from leftover yarns and cocoon shells to even the small stems attached to the cocoons. Rather than dyeing the fibers, the textiles celebrate the silk’s own natural colors and textures.

The rugs, woven with cotton warp and silk weft in a dense and durable structure, combine remarkable strength with rich visual expression. Because they are created using unique combinations of leftover silk yarns, no two pieces are alike; each possesses its own distinctive palette, texture, and character.

Spinning the yarn, honoring the integrity of the material, and weaving each piece with meticulous care—through this accumulation of thoughtful handwork emerge textiles imbued with a warmth and vitality that machines can never replicate.
