ギャラリーやまほん25周年を迎える本年の最後を飾る展覧会は、mon Sakata 展です。
mon Sakataのデザイナーである坂田敏子さんは、「古道具 坂田」を通して骨董の新たな価値観を築いた坂田和實さん（1945–2022）の妻であり、長年にわたりともに暮らしとものづくりを重ねてきました。 坂田和實さんが提唱した「権威や肩書きを離れ、自らの眼でモノを感じ、自分の物差しでモノを見る」という精神は、工芸や美術を超えて、多くの人々の生活観や美意識に深く影響を与えました。 敏子さんもまた同じ思想を持ちながらも、日常の中にある小さな美しさを軽やかに掬いとり、布や糸を通して「柔らかな感性が持つ眼」を表現しています。

本展では、古着のような継ぎはぎが印象的な一点ものの洋服をはじめ、長く愛されてきた定番のニットやシャツなど、mon Sakataの世界を象徴する作品が並びます。日々の暮らしの中に静かに寄り添い、時間とともに味わいを深めていく洋服たちは、身にまとう人の感性を映す鏡のようでもあります。25年という節目にあたり、やまほんがこれまで大切にしてきた「モノを見る眼」と「暮らしの中の美しさ」を、坂田夫妻の思想とともに振り返る機会となれば幸いです。どうぞご覧ください。

As Gallery Yamahon celebrates its 25th anniversary, our final exhibition of the year will be a showcase of mon Sakata. Toshiko Sakata, the designer behind mon Sakata, is the wife of Kazumi Sakata (1945–2022), who—through his renowned antique shop “Kodōgu Sakata”—established a new way of appreciating antiques. Together, they shared a life deeply intertwined with craft and making.
Kazumi Sakata advocated an approach of “setting aside authority and titles, sensing objects with one’s own eyes, and seeing them through one’s own measure.” This philosophy transcended craft and art, profoundly influencing the lifestyles and aesthetic sensibilities of many. Sharing this ethos, Toshiko Sakata captures the quiet beauty that lies within everyday life, expressing “an eye guided by a gentle sensibility” through fabric and thread. This exhibition will present works emblematic of the world of mon Sakata: one-of-a-kind garments with patchwork reminiscent of well-loved clothing, alongside long-admired staples such as knits and shirts. These garments, which quietly accompany daily life and grow richer with time, act like mirrors reflecting the sensibilities of the wearer. As we mark this 25-year milestone, we hope the exhibition offers an opportunity to reflect on the perspectives Gallery Yamahon has cherished—“an eye for objects” and “the beauty found in daily life”—together with the Sakatas’ philosophy.
